The Live Baccarat Game
Live Baccarat is a simple game where player up to 14 players bet on who has the highest hand the Banco (Dealer) or Punto (Player) or if it will be a standoff hand are of equal value. The Punto is the player with the largest bet. An 8 or 9 is a natural 10 and face cards have no value, ace is 1. If the total of the hand is in double digits the left digit is dropped i.e. 13 becomes 3. Two cards are dealt from a shoe with 6-8 decks to the Banco and Punto if either hand isn’t a natural a third card may be given. Every version of the game may have different rules about giving a third card.
Punto gets a third card if total is equal to or less than 5. If the Punto does not take a third card the Banco stands at 6 or 7 or follows their own third card rules if 5 or less to determine whether they take a third card or not.
Banco definitely takes a third card if total is 2. If the Banco total is 3 then the Banco draws a third card unless the Punto third card was an 8. If Banco total is 4 then the Banco draws a third card unless the Punto third card was a 0, 1, 8, or 9. If Banco total is 5 then the bank draws a third card if the Punto third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7. If Banco total is 6 then the bank draws a third card if the Punto third card was a 6 or 7.
Odds are even money, however if you bet Banco you pay 5% commission – the house advantage. Odds of standoff are usually given at 8/1 or 9/1. The reason for taxing the Banco is that with an 8 deck the Banco will win 3 or 4 times more than Punto. Some versions offer even money odds with no commission, except when the Banco wins with a 6, and then charge 50% commission.
Live Baccarat has three main versions Banco Punto (Described above), Banque, and Chemin du fer. Both versions differ in that players, not the Casino, play the role of the Bank. Banque differs from Banco Punto in that the player with the largest amount of risk or money involved is the Bank. The game is usually played with 3 decks and the Banker holds their position until they choose to retire. Chemin du fer differs from Punto Banco in that the Banker only remains so as long as they win.
